What to see in Antalya: city, coast and the right day trips
Updated October 8, 2026 · 7 min read
Antalya is both a large Mediterranean city and the usual base for a much wider coast. That distinction matters. Kaleiçi, the old harbour and the cliff parks belong to a city day; Perge, Aspendos, Köprülü Canyon and the resort coast require separate outings. Trying to collect all of them in one itinerary produces more time in traffic than at the places you came to see.
Start with Kaleiçi on foot
Enter the old town through Hadrian’s Gate, built for the emperor’s visit to Attaleia in AD 130. Walk downhill through Kaleiçi to the old harbour, then continue towards Hıdırlık Tower and Karaalioğlu Park. The sequence works because it follows the slope and finishes at open views across the cliffs and sea.
Allow for polished stones, kerbs and steps. The district is compact but not uniformly level, and the return from the harbour is uphill. Early morning gives cooler lanes; evening brings more atmosphere but also more people. A guided walk adds the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman context that is easy to miss among shops and cafés.
The small-group Old City tour with a boat trip and cable car is listed as an eight-hour city overview. It suits a first visit when organisation matters more than unhurried wandering. If you mainly want architecture and street life, explore independently and use the Antalya Old Town tours page only to compare guided options.
Choose one second focus
For a city-and-nature day, pair Kaleiçi with Lower Düden, where the water drops from Antalya’s cliffs into the Mediterranean. A boat view and a land view are different experiences; weather and sea conditions can alter sailings. Upper Düden and Kurşunlu are separate stops inland, not alternative names for the same waterfall.
For a beach afternoon, Konyaaltı is the straightforward city choice west of the centre. Lara refers to a much broader eastern area, so check the exact beach or hotel location before assuming it is close. Neither beach needs to be squeezed into a history day.
Give antiquity its own day
Perge is the easiest major archaeological site to combine with Antalya. Aspendos is known for its preserved Roman theatre, while Termessos is a mountain site involving a steeper approach and more walking. These are not interchangeable stops. Heat, shade and uneven ground shape the day as much as distance does.
The Perge, Aspendos, Side and Manavgat Waterfall day trip starts from €15.20 in the current selection and is listed for nine hours. It covers far more ground than a self-guided city day, but the trade-off is a fixed timetable. Compare it with other ancient-site tours from Antalya.
A realistic first visit
With one day, choose Kaleiçi, the harbour and one cliff or waterfall viewpoint. With two, add either a beach day or Perge and Aspendos. Save Pamukkale, Suluada and Köprülü Canyon for separate long outings. Antalya rewards choosing a coherent area; the province is too large for a checklist.
